Koh Phangan Hospital UPS Project: Resilient Power Solution for Remote Medical Facilities
Ⅰ. Project Overview
Located on a remote island, Koh Phangan Hospital mainly relies on the main power grid connected to the island for electricity. Although the hospital is equipped with two generators as backup power, power outages and voltage fluctuations often occur during the switching between the main grid and generators. This leads to equipment damage, disrupted medical procedures, and serious threats to patient safety. Especially during the monsoon season, frequent power interruptions severely affect the hospital’s operations and patient care. The hospital needs a stable power supply system to protect expensive medical equipment and ensure the continuity of medical services.

Ⅱ. Core Challenges
- Address power outages: Reduce the adverse impacts of power interruptions on hospital services and equipment caused by power switching between the grid and generators.
- Remote monitoring and management: Require an operation and maintenance system capable of remote monitoring and management to immediately issue alarms and automatically generate reports during power outages.
Ⅲ. Solutions
BKPOWER, in collaboration with local partners in Thailand, provided a 600KV three-phase line-frequency AUPS system for Koh Phangan Hospital. The system meets the hospital’s requirement for 15-minute backup at 80% load and enables remote monitoring and management through network card connection. After the commissioning service, the hospital signed a three-year preventive maintenance agreement and plans to deploy more UPS systems in the future to support its digitalization process.
Ⅳ. Project Achievements
- Stability and reliability: The solution includes extended battery modules, providing 15-minute power backup at 80% load, and network cards for remote monitoring and management. This not only stabilizes the hospital’s power system but also ensures the continuous operation of medical equipment.
- Energy efficiency: The line-frequency UPS adopts an isolation transformer design and complex control circuits, achieving up to 96% efficiency. It is one of the most energy-efficient UPS systems, offering strong load protection.
- Intelligent interconnection: The intelligent self-service terminals operate well, allowing medical staff to focus on patient care.
